Explosions in the Sky is a post rock instrumental band from Texas. Although they have put out many albums, "Last Known Surroundings" is the first single for which they have authorized an official music video.
Explosions in the sky chose PTARMAK, a design studio also from Texas and friends of the band, to handle the music video. Using a blend of 2d and 3d animation, illustrator Sissy Emmons and Animator David Hobizal created an abstract journey through the essence of the song.
In this particular piece, I am attracted to the abstracted nature, the spacial relationships respective to those elements and the methods used to create a flow, harmony, sense of movement and smooth transitions between scenes. This animation gives the viewer the feeling of traveling, of bearing witness to history. They have used simple but effective methods of giving life to an otherwise static scene.
